Tough vs Tough Magnetic: which phone case should you choose?

3 min read

The short answer: choose Tough Magnetic if you want built-in magnets for compatible magnetic accessories. Choose Tough if you do not need that feature. Both are matte FORM CASE options; the important differences are the magnetic module and the phone models offered in each style.

What the two styles have in common

Both styles in our reviewed catalog use a polycarbonate outer shell with a TPU lining. Both have a matte finish, with artwork wrapping around the sides. Choosing the magnetic version does not mean choosing a different design aesthetic.

Construction details describe the product; they are not a promise that a phone cannot break. We do not publish a certified drop-height claim for these cases. If a specific protection certification matters to you, ask for evidence before buying rather than reading the word “Tough” as a test result.

What built-in magnets change

Tough Magnetic adds a built-in magnetic module compatible with MagSafe accessories. Tough has no built-in MagSafe magnets. This distinction matters if your everyday setup includes a magnetic mount, wallet or charger.

Magnetic attachment and wireless charging are different questions. A magnetic case does not turn an unsupported phone into a wireless-charging phone, and it does not guarantee a particular charging speed. Check your exact phone and accessory specifications together. If you are unsure about a setup, contact us with the model names before ordering.

Start with the accessories you actually use

If you already use a compatible magnetic accessory and want to keep using it, start with Tough Magnetic. If you charge with a cable and do not attach accessories magnetically, Tough may cover the features you need. You can compare the current prices on the product page.

Neither choice needs to be a guess about future habits. Think about the charger on your nightstand, your car mount and anything you attach to the back of your current case. Those are more useful clues than the style name alone.

Availability follows the exact phone model

The two styles do not support the same range of phones. Choose your full model in the store to see the available options. Similar names are not interchangeable: an iPhone Pro and Pro Max, for example, need their own fit.

After switching case styles, review the phone selection again. The store shows product photos for the model you select; camera openings and artwork placement vary with that model. If your phone is not offered in Tough Magnetic, check Tough rather than choosing the nearest-looking device.
